I still remember the first time my father handed me the keys to my first car. It wasn’t brand new or anything. On the contrary, it was the oldest car in my father’s garage, but at least it was mine. I felt ecstatic and exhilarated. I imagined taking many trips in that car: just me, Colby (the name I christened it with) and the open road. What I didn’t know was that it actually took a lot of work to maintain a car: you had to take it for yearly smog inspection, engine checks, and so much more.

That’s why it’s important that you take good care of your car. Getting regular car check-ups ensures that your vehicle is in good working order and won’t just conk out in the middle of a highway.

One of the most important check-ups you should routinely give your car is a smog inspection. What’s a smog inspection? Basically, it’s a procedure that measures the amount of pollutants and chemicals released by your vehicle’s exhaust system. It also determines what kind of pollutants your car releases and whether or not it is harmful to the environment.

The first time I got a smog testing for Colby, we were just right on time. According to the evaluation, my car was emitting a little more smog than was necessary because it needed a good tuning up. If I hadn't taken Colby down to the mechanic, I would not have known this. And who knows what could have happened? I might have been on a road trip, emitting dangerous gases and risking my life and those of others on the road.

A couple of years have passed since I got my first car. Colby and I had a lot of adventures on the road before I parked him permanently back in my father’s garage when I left for the Big City. Now, I have a new car that I bring to the mechanic twice a year (every six months) to get a routine check-up.

Because of the global efforts to lessen carbon emissions that cause global warming, a lot of states require cars to undergo smog checks annually. There are special Smog Check Test Only stations where you can avail of examinations for free. Rules and regulations vary from state to state though, so it would be good to find out what the law is in your area. But even if your state may not require a yearly examination, it would really be good to get one.

Remember, road safety must always be first priority. So, if your car hasn't had an inspection yet this year, go ahead and drive to the nearest smog check locations.
